Martyrs in America

We had been warned, had we not? But never in our wildest dreams did we ever think it could come to this.

I think my friend Antonio was one of the first to recognize what was happening. Having come from the old country to America he valued the freedoms in America more than we did, I think. It seemed he could see more clearly than we could, unless of course, we just didn't want to see. I can remember him asking in the quizzical way he had, "Bread without money! My friend something is just not right!" he had said.

I can remember several people told him, "Antonio, don't bite the hand that feeds you!"

Ah, yes, we should have known what was happening. The churches in America going underground for fear of their lives! Unthinkable! But that is what has happened.

I'm getting ahead of myself; let me go back to the beginning.

When did it all start? There were many tell-tale signs along the way but we simply chose to ignore them, I think. In the years before the great tribulation in America many of us noticed changes that were taking place but they were minor, were they not? We could live with these, we told ourselves. We justified these small changes saying they were good for the people. We merely thought the government was looking after our well-being. After all we were a civilized society and there must be order even if it was an inconvenience to some.

But looking back now we see what we didn’t see then. These so-called minor changes were changes that affected our freedoms. We were told that we must sacrifice some freedoms for the well-being of all the people. Sure some people would be affected more than others but this is the price we must pay to keep order in a growing country.
